One Big Ring and a Bit o’ Polish

I’m not a fan of Ms. Moss but kudos to her, Sophie Ellis Baxter and Lily Cole for alerting me to the latest revolution in nail colour technology.

Ladies beware: I think I have found the answer to speedy drying yet chip resistant polish. And, what’s more, it’s only £2.99 a bottle. Behold…. Rimmel’s I ♥ Long Lasting nail polish!

You know, I’m not much of an advertisement whore but I’m completely head over heels in love with this product. I wouldn’t even consider myself much of a nail fanatic; if anything I find nail polish shopping a chore and a bore rather than a God-given pleasure.

But there is something about the Hotshot and Electric shades which really caught my eye when skipping my way through Boots the other day. And what’s more, the cute “♥” symbol on the packaging really appealed to my girlieness. Proof, then, that it really is the smallest of things which make your day, and that I really am so gullible as to be won over by a ‘♥’ symbol on the packaging of a nail polish bottle.

On the subject of hands, I also decided to update my ring collection now that the high street is awash with super-discounted jewellery sales. The dimpled oval ring on my index finger was an absolute steal at £2 from Wallis (reduced by £8!) and the very fussy beaded piece on the middle digit was slightly more expensive at £9 from Oasis. I felt the detailing was worth it though, and being a student meant I got a couple of quid off the price tag!

Oh man, I am such a sucker for cocktail rings and pretty nail polish colours. What are your favourite nail polishes, and are you a fan of pretty rings? Spill.

Because Bear Hats aren’t cute.

Several months ago River Island started selling these knitted panda bear bobble hats (pictured right on Katy Perry). I admit, when I first came across them I was in love. I loved the idea of skipping into University with the knitted face of China’s most endangered species attached to my head. It was sort of cool and ironic, in a “Look at me, I’m cute and I very obviously support WWF” kind of way. Upon trying on the item however, I realised I looked perhaps a little special as opposed to cute and ironic. I hastily replaced the item on its shelf.

Three months down the line, everyone and Katy Perry is wearing the damn hat. And no one looks cute in it. Unless they’re Japanese and have the naturally awesome ability to look super kawaii with every living, breathing second of the day.

But we are not all super kawaii. We are adults, we like money and power and deceit and other evil things. Knitted panda hats are so not us, and such a lie.

Time to stop venting and hand it over to you, gorgeous fashion-conscious readers. Knitted panda hats: cute or just plain silly? You decide.

p.s. Sorry for the late post. I had an exam. It was bollocks.

Don’t worry, it’s not a real Grizzly.

So the other day I happened to accidentally stumble into Sandhurst’s very big and very impressive Marks & Sparks, and simply couldn’t resist this faux fur scarf despite my more-than-just-a-little-bit-embarrassing credit rating.

Don’t you just love it? I have to say, I really seem to be developing a fetish for all things fur lately. Faux fur, may I add, before PETA start chucking rubber maggots and red paint at me.

So lovely dear squishy readers, please do tell me what you think of this fabulous fur revival. I think I am very almost tempted to raid the January sales in the hope of grabbing me an absolutely furtastic coat bargain. That, or I might actually start to bother raiding the local thrift/charity stores.

Vintage from the heavens

So these past couple of days have been very hectic, what with all the hustle and bustle and fussle which comes with moving house. Now that I’m more or less settled into a stable routine, I’m hoping updates around here might be a little more stable too.

One thing I’ve always loved about changing location is the fact it gives you the opportunity to sort out and totally reinvent your wardrobe, ie. in with the new, out with the old, and resurrecting those long forgotten classics that went missing many a month ago. And believe me have I been doing some resurrecting!

Whilst packing up my belongings in preparation for my return to university, I decided I needed some sort of box or tin to encapsulate my accessories. As I searched high and low for a container of the right proportions, I suddenly came across a small sandwich box filled with rubbish. Perfect. As I peeled back the lid, I grabbed a handful of this rubbish and chucked it onto the bed. It was then that it struck me that the term “rubbish” couldn’t have been any less fitting. Long, elegant strands of pearls and crystal beads laced the bedclothes in an ornate fashion; dazzling and breathtaking beneath the mid-afternoon sunlight which splayed across the room. I couldn’t believe it. My deceased grandmother’s jewellery – how could I treat these treasures with such disregard?

I have to say, my grandma must have been one trendy chick. I can’t really remember her style as she died when I was just 5 years old, but from the stories I get from my mum I always envisage her as a woman of a smart, elegant style. She even used to chase women down the street to ask them where they got their skirt from. Brilliant!

Needless to say, I’m sure she would have wanted me to continue wearing her jewellery, particularly at a time when pearls can bring such a bold statement to an outfit. I can also now understand what is so beautiful about vintage jewellery, because believe me, I couldn’t think of anything more off putting than recycling dead-people’s garments! I totally get it now though. It might be a while before you find me donning vintage lace gowns and waistcoats and what have you, but I’m not going to say never!

Question: What are your thoughts on vintage clothing/accessories? Do you have any hand-me-downs from relatives which you really love and are not ashamed to wear?
